Defusing the bomb: The use of symbolism, planning and rule setting in nurse-led therapy

Dean-David Holyoake Nurse Consultant, Woodbourne Priory Hospital Birmingham

Reflecting on problem-solving work with a young person with mental health problems helped Dean-David Holyoake to consider the important attachment work that nurses engage in with distressed young people

I know nothing about bombs and I am grateful for this. The fact that they are made, planted and detonated with the single aim of destruction fills me with dread. It is a brave person who defuses a bomb, and it was with this imagery in mind that I set about problem-solving work with Anna (not her real name). Reflecting on this process in this article, has helped me to consider the important attachment work that nurses engage in with distressed young people.
