In the second of a series of three articles, the Health Care Research Unit of Newcastle upon Tyne University continues the assessment of the development, evaluation and future of MIS nursing homes

This article focuses on one objective within our study: providing information to enable a judgement to be made about the relative social efficiency of NHS nursing homes compared with conventional care in hospital wards. This judgement is concerned with a decision whether to implement a policy which replaces continuing care in geriatric beds in hospital by care provided in nurse-managed NHS nursing homes with medical input from GPs.
