Abstract: Objective To evaluate short-term results of the meniscal-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty(UKA) in patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis. Methods From Oct. 2011 to Jan. 2013, UKA was carried out on 47 patients who underwent UKA for isolated medial compartment knee osteoarthritis. Patients underwent UKA with the Oxford phase 3 cemented meniscal-bearing unicondylar prosthesis using minimally invasive surgery. The results were assessed preoperatively and at final controls according to the Oxford rating system, American Knee Society clinical and functional rating system. Postoperative radiographic evaluations and range of motion were also observed. Results The mean follow-up period was 13 months(range 6 to 21 months). No patient was lost to follow-up. Two patients underwent revision surgery and change of the inlay due to bearing dislocation. Complications such as infection, pulmonary embolism, deep venous thrombosis, or neurovascular injury were not observed. The mean preoperative and postoperative American knee scores were(50.5 ±3.9) and(86.9±4.9), and the mean functional scores were(47.0±6.6) and(86.4±9.4), respectively(P <0.05). The mean preoperative and postoperative Oxford knee scores were(24.6±1.9) and(41.3±3.5), respectively(P <0.05). Postoperative radiographic measurements showed that the position of the femoral components was within acceptable ranges in all the patients with a mean of 1.2°valgus. The mean flexion postoperative was(121.0±6.7)degrees. Conclusion The short-term results of the meniscal-bearing unicompartmental knee prosthesis are excellent or good in the treatment of medial compartment knee osteoarthritis.
