The purpose of this research is to find out the differences in motivation to move into +40 cohousing, participation in common activities, and life satisfaction of Swedish +40 cohousing residents between those who have never thought to move out and those who have. The data of 127 respondents from 4 +40 cohousing communities used for this research are a subset of data (J. Choi & J. Paulsson, 2011) surveyed from 12 Swedish cohousing communities. The statistical methods used in this research are frequencies, T test, and crosstabs. The results showed that there was no difference in general characteristics of residents, except education, according to the intention to stay or move. However, there were some notable differences in motivation to move in and participating in common activities. Potential stayers were more likely than potential movers not only to have a high motivation to support +40 cohousing ideology and to have good relationships with other inhabitants, but also to frequently participate in common activities such as common meals and steering committee meetings. The subjective evaluation of not only the frequencies and contents of participating in common activities but also the level of life satisfaction statisti cally differed in the two groups. The potential stayers were more likely than potential movers to think the frequency of participation should be higher, and the contents just suited them. On the other hand, the potential movers were more likely to think the frequency of participation was already too much for them and showed other interests. Potential stayers were more likely to have higher life satisfaction in all aspects of life. The results of this research implies that potential stayers are more likely than potential movers to have a higher motivation to support +40 cohousing life, to actively participate in common activities, and to have higher life satisfaction, which accords with the mission of the cohousing, even though the general characteristics of the two groups do not differ. Understanding the differences between the two groups may contribute to the stability and sustainability of living in +40 cohousing communities.
