The verb “declutter” has not yet made it into the Oxford English Dictionary, but its ever-increasing usage suggests that it’s only a matter of time. Articles containing tips and tricks on how to get organized cover magazine pages and pop up in TV programs and commercials, while clutter professionals and specialists referred to as “clutterologists” are just a phone call away. Everywhere the sentiment is the same: clutter is bad.

In The Hoarders, Scott Herring provides an in-depth examination of how modern hoarders came into being, from their onset in the late 1930s to the present day. He finds that both the idea of organization and the role of the clutterologist are deeply ingrained in our culture, and that there is a fine line between clutter and deviance in America. Herring introduces us to Jill, whose countertops are piled high with decaying food and whose cabinets are overrun with purchases, while the fly strips hanging from her ceiling are arguably more fly than strip. When Jill spots a decomposing pumpkin about to be jettisoned, she stops, seeing in the rotting, squalid vegetable a special treasure. “I’ve never seen one quite like this before,” she says, and looks to see if any seeds remain. It is from moments like these that Herring builds his questions: What counts as an acceptable material life—and who decides? Is hoarding some sort of inherent deviation of the mind, or a recent historical phenomenon grounded in changing material cultures? Herring opts for the latter, explaining that hoarders attract attention not because they are mentally ill but because they challenge normal modes of material relations. Piled high with detailed and, at times, disturbing descriptions of uncleanliness, The Hoarders delivers a sweeping and fascinating history of hoarding that will cause us all to reconsider how we view these accumulators of clutter.

Scott Herring is associate professor in the Department of English at Indiana University. He is the author of Another Country: Queer Anti-Urbanism and Queering the Underworld: Slumming, Literature, and the Undoing of Lesbian and Gay History, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

This Introduction refutes the claim that hoarding is a mental illness. It first surveys psychology texts and argues that hoarding has been incorrectly seen as a pathology whose classification can be found in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Contrary to this reception, the Introduction suggests that hoarding in America is a modern moral panic over things such as clutter and inappropriate keepsakes. Examining the sensationalism that hoarders incite across media, the Introduction contests this depiction and outlines how to think critically and ethically about the psychopathology of material life. It maintains that we should not treat hoarding as a neurological malfunction or as a specialized anxiety disorder but that we must historicize why hoarding seems disreputable in the United States. This chapter explores the role that Collyer Brothers syndrome played in hoarding’s historical formation. This cultural history of Homer Collyer and Langley Collyer surveys sensational reports regarding two of the most famous hoarders in modern America. It argues that representations of the Collyers facilitated a cultural shift in hoarding as a curious abnormality. Descriptions of these two eccentrics in newspaper articles after their deaths in 1947 treated their disorderly mansion in Harlem and their belongings as a freak show. Magazines and novels supported this image of these men as pathological hoarders, and they influenced the concept of hoarding as a form of chronic disorganization. Exploring how these early accounts of hoarding also connected to depictions of Harlem and its residents, the chapter finds that reports on individuals treated as insane hoarders were influenced by social anxieties over urban social disorder. This chapter considers the cultural role that collectibles and their deviations play in the historical development of hoarding as a mental illness. It notes that scientists often refer to hoarding as pathological or abnormal collecting, and it argues that the modern activity of normal collecting contributed to this diagnostic. To do so the chapter first presents a brief history of antiques and collectibles in America and it details how inexpensive price guides by individuals such as Ralph and Terry Kovel promoted interest in this activity. Turning to Andy Warhol and his many collectibles, the chapter then traces how fears of hoarding upset this leisure activity of ordinary collecting. It uses Warhol’s belongings to confirm this cultural history by looking at Sotheby’s 1987 auction of his collectibles and then his Time Capsules, containers filled with thousands of his personal effects archived at The Andy Warhol Museum. This chapter surveys the role that professional home organizing played in the social construction of hoarding as a mental illness. It argues that organizers normalize the hoarder and present the hoarder’s lifestyle as a form of abnormal untidiness. Exploring how these organizers and their self-help books often treat hoarding as an addiction to clutter, the chapter claims that these professionals represent improper housekeeping as a mental illness once called Messy House syndrome or Pack Rat syndrome. Tracing how earlier worries over household hygiene influenced contemporary professional organizing, the chapter then charts how organizers depict excessive clutter as a moral panic over inappropriate household goods. Using the works of professional homer organizer Sandra Felton as its main case study, the chapter finally suggests that the beliefs of professional organizers have been embraced by scientific experts as both treat hoarding as a mental illness in need of assessment and cure. This chapter examines how accounts of pathological hoarding emerged alongside accounts of pathological old age. It explores how cultural depictions of aging recluses fostered stereotypes of the aberrant hoarder. To so do it traces a history of senile squalor syndrome that associates the elderly with the accumulation of rubbish. Using the 1975 documentary film Grey Gardens and it subjects Edith Bouvier Beale and Edie Beale as its main case study, the chapter details how modern fears over late life material culture support depictions of elder hoarding. Surveying the cultural history of geriatrics and gerontology in the United States, the chapter describes how these disciplines advanced apprehension over the belongings of older men and women such as Edith Bouvier Beale. These discourses of the pathological aged and their departures from socially acceptable forms of keepsakes and memorabilia continue to influence popular and scientific accounts of hoarding.
