In recent years, the population of the aged is relatively increased. After retirement, the bodily functions deteriorate drastically. The lifestyle undergos structural changes. The tempo of life suddenly becomes slow. All these mentioned above will most likely lead to self-conflict and maladaptation. This study will focus on how to alleviate the negative impact from retirement and on how to positively face and adapt to the problems by adjusting their mentality and behavior. The related studies show that the importance of retirement hinges on the avoidance of the “retirement shock”, the adaptation to the reversal of role-playing, and successful enjoyment of twilight years. From the viewpoint of gerontology, the fundamental theory of retirement adaptation could be generalized as: the development of social psychology, activity, withdrawal, role-playing, the subculture of the aged, etc. Hence the problems faced by the retired aged are: health, mentality, social adaptation, economy and leisure time activities. Therefore, the effective ways to adapt to retirement could be generalized as: (1)psychological adaptation through correct concept about retirement and positive attitude toward aging. (2) physiological adaptation through intelligent planning and arrangement of daily life. (3) economic adaptation through maintaining the stability and independence by adequately handling personal finance. (4) social adaptation through continuing the activities of further education, or through looking for the opportunities of re-employment, volunteer jobs or leisure time activities. v
