The trial of the Nazi war criminals who committed their crimes in the North-West of Russia was held in Leningrad in the winter of 1945 - 1946, simultaneously with the trial in Nuremberg.
Its course was covered by all the major city newspapers: Leningradskaya Pravda, Smena, and Vecherny Leningrad. The criminal proceedings were attended by journalists, photographers, filmmakers, and newspaper cartoonists.
In addition to regular reports on the progress of court sessions in the print media, op-ed articles, and interviews with victims of crimes, photographs, and cartoons drawn from life were published.
All this information was intended for residents of the city who suffered the 900-day siege. Most of them lost their loved ones in the war. The purpose of all the materials was to show that justice was as impartial as the Allies – the Soviet Union, the United States and Great Britain – had agreed on.
The military tribunal sentenced the nine of the accused war criminals to death by hanging, the three of them were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment.
The final newspaper materials were devoted to the public execution of those sentenced to death.
