The article presents the results of the diagnostic research of the expression of emotional perception of cultural phenomena by foreign language students in Lithuania.
There is a close relationship between emotions and culture. On the one hand, emotions reflect a person’s inner state and regulate his/her communication with others in different cultural and social environments [8]. On the other hand, a particular culture affects human emotions via different cognitive and behavioural expressions. Living in a particular cultural environment, a person develops particular values that determine their emotional perception of the surrounding world [9]. Therefore, the article addresses the following research problem what emotions do students of foreign languages experience in regard to the culture of native country (Lithuania) and the target culture whose language they have chosen to study?
The object of the research is the emotional perception of culture phenomena by students of foreign languages.
The aim of the article is to explore the peculiarities of the emotional perception of culture phenomena by foreign language students.
Research methods. Ilyin’s [6] classification of emotions was taken as the basis for the investigation of feelings that are most often experienced in regard to native and target culture. The feelings of pride, joy, care, responsibility, anger (dissatisfaction), shame and guilt were distinguished. Under certain conditions, emotions can affect values and even become values themselves [2]. Therefore, the feelings of foreign language students were evaluated from the point of view of their stability and intensity.
Having generalised the research data, it was determined that the students related their feelings to the phenomena significant for national culture: mother tongue, national identity and protection of national heritage. They also experienced stable feelings towards elite culture.
