This study was aimed to examine the exercise participation, physical fitness and perceived efficacy of exercise among college freshmen in Taiwan. The relationship between body mass index (BMI) and cumulative weekly exercise time (WET) was also studied. A total of 1,466 freshmen from 10 universities were surveyed through a self-administered questionnaire, together with the health-related physical fitness assessment during the physical education (PE) class. Stratified analysis was adopted based on gender. Results showed that exercise frequency, excluding participants of PE class was about only 1 day per week. Comparatively, female students exercised less frequently than male students. These results suggest that more efforts are needed to encourage college studies to participate in exercise programs regularly. Both BMI and WET were significantly correlated with physical fitness score. Higher level of self-perceptions and satisfaction for exercise participation were observed among the students with a normal BMI and those with a longer WET. Participants in overweight and sedentary categories tended to disagree that exercise can improve body image. In summary, university students in Taiwan seemed to exercise less frequently than expected according to the national recommendations made by the Ministry of Education. Lack of exercise habit represents a health concern among the college students, who are the contributors of the future society. Our study suggests that establishing exercise skill and habit should be listed as one of core educational goals for students in university.
