Abstract: |
The groundworks pertaining to the erection of a pair of new flats were the subject of an archaeological watching brief. The watching brief identified a series of modern made ground deposits overlying a natural subsoil horizon along with several foundations of brick pertaining to former buildings that had stood on this site. These foundations were probably associated with a row or terrace of cottages featured on Ordnance Survey maps of 1889-1951 at this location. So it is possible to conclude that these foundations were probably at least 19th century in origin with the foundation along the St John's Street frontage (constructed on a concrete offset) probably being 20th century in date. No archaeological features, structures, deposits or finds associated with the medieval settlement of Holbeach were found. |
