Open Access eBook Supply Chain Maps for Distribution and Usage Reporting

  • 1. Clarke & Esposito

Description

These two data flow diagrams are excerpted from the Open Access (OA) Books Supply Chain Mapping Report (10.5281/zenodo.4681724), produced for the "Developing a Data Trust for Open Access Ebook Usage" project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. These diagrams illuminate the metadata and usage data flows among OA monograph supply chain stakeholders.

The OA eBook Distribution Supply Chain Map diagram (Page 1) reflects the key metadata transfer standards, data harvesting pathways and data flows in use between stakeholders as of 2020.

The OA eBook Usage Reporting Supply Chain Map diagram (Page 2) reflects data flows among stakeholders pertaining to OA eBook usage, engagement, DOI resolution and structured usage report provision as of 2020.

Both diagrams were developed based on information collected in 2020 through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with stakeholders and subject-matter experts representative of the supply chain. Interviewees represented publishers, academic librarians, aggregators, publishing platform providers, online book distributors, and others. Preliminary versions were made available for public comment from 16 October 2020 - 9 April 2021 and shared in conferences and industry groups.  Feedback is incorporated into this final version.
