Knowledge and Technology Exchange (KTE) Survey at Eawag

  • 1. Eawag

Description

Knowledge and Technology Exchange (KTE) is, in addition to research and teaching, one of the three key tasks of Eawag’s researchers. This study was carried out in order to learn how the scientists could be supported more effectively in their KTE activities. Its focus is on the scientist rather than external stakeholders. For this reason, a survey was conducted among 232 researchers at Eawag. The quantitative questionnaire encompassed items with different levels of measurement and additional options for qualitative comments. Its analysis include descriptive and inferential statistics. The replies of the participating scientists revealed not only that many different KTE activities are important for their research but also that they have possibilities to be engaged in these activities. Furthermore, many researchers stated that intrinsic motivators, like an interest to promote the diffusion of research findings (Q_34, T2B 93%), are the reason for their current engagement in KTE activities. In contrast, measures that are expected to increase the effectivity of future KTE activities can be categorised as rather extrinsic motivators. The highest agreement was found for dedicated funding (Q_30, T2B 75%), an alteration of the metrics of science (Q_25, T2B 68%), and an embedment of external stakeholders in research projects for the entire duration of the project (Q_24, T2B 63%). Thus, it can be recommended to support a wide range of KTE activities, foster the intrinsic motivation of researchers, and set external incentives for KTE activities. However, due to the small completion rate of the questionnaire (13%), the recommendations need to be verified and backed up in further investigations before they should be put into action on a larger scale.
