나는 프로이트의『환상의 미래』에서 종교 관념에 대한 그의 견해를 분석해 다음과 같이 논증한다. 첫째, 프로이트는 환상을 망상과 구별하는 데 실패했다. 둘째, 그는 이 실패를 종교 관념의 참 거짓을 따질 수 없다는 작은 결론으로 실토한다. 셋째, 프로이트의 실토는 도킨스의 눈으로 보면 종교 관념에 대한 영구적 불가지론과 일시적 불가지론의 양립 불가능성을 위반하는 것이다. 넷째, 프로이트가 과학 연구를 환상의 무의식 영역과 관찰, 사유의 의식 영역에 함께 있는 것으로 본다고 해석하면 그는 두 불가지론의 양립 불가능성 위반에서 벗어날 수 있다. 다섯째, 『환상의 미래』에서 “문화 자산” 개념과『문명 속의 불만』에서 개인의 본능을 억제하는 문화로서 종교 관념은 두 불가지론의 양립 가능성을 뒷받침하는 기초를 제공한다.

I analyze Freud’s view in The Future of an Illusion on religious ideas and argue as follows. First, Freud failed to distinguish illusion from delusion. Second, he confesses this failure in the small conclusion that the true or false of religious ideas cannot be judged. Third, from the eyes of R. Dawkins, Freud’s confession seems to violate the incompatibility of permanent agnosticism and temporary agnosticism for religious ideas. Fourth, if we interpret Freud as seeing scientific work as coexisting in the unconscious realm of illusion and in the conscious realm of observation and thought, he can escape from the violation of the incompatibility of the two agnosticisms. Fifth, the concept of “cultural assets” in The Future of an Illusion and religious ideas as a culture that suppresses individual instincts in Civilization and Its Discontents provides a basis for supporting the compatibility of the two agnosticisms.
