Abstract:

The aim of this paper, inserted in the frame of SuWaRest (Sustainable Water management and wetland Restoration in settlements of continental-arid Central Asia) project, is to present the results of a preliminary techno¬ economic evaluation of reed potential as energy source, with particular regards to Wuliangsuhai Lake region (Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China). In order to estimate the reed productivity, reed samples have been collected in October 2011, both in the lake and in the land around it and also characterized by means of elemental and calorimetric analysis. The theoretical yield and the equilibrium composition of the reaction products (syngas and char) of reed thermochemical conversion processes (pyrolysis and gasification) has been estimated through an enhanced gas-solid equilibrium model. In addition, in order to collect information about the current situation of reed market, several interviews of officials, scientist and local people have been carried out. The collected information has been useful for a preliminary techno-economical evaluation, representing a first step in the achievement of the project purpose regarding the energetic utilization of reed.
