20세기 이후 예술가들은 정치, 사회, 문화적 주제에 대한 여러 비판과 메시지를 전달하는 방법으로 언어를 작품에 사용하기 시작하였다. 이는 시각적 이미지와 언어의 관계, (소리로 전달되는) 말과 재현의 관계에 대해 생각해보는 계기가 되었다. 또한 시각적 이미지와 텍스트의 조합과 변형 등을 통해 시도된 다양한 표현방식들은 오늘날 나타나는 거의 모든 시각예술 영역에 있어서 매체로서의 텍스트의 의미와 활용성의 영역을 확장하게 하였다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 이미지와 텍스트의 형식(기표)과 의미(기의)가 만드는 의미작용 관계에 주목하면서, 동시대 현대미술에서 텍스트 매체를 활용한 예술 표현양상에 관해 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 방법은 먼저 이미지와 텍스트의 개념 및 다매체적 표현방식에 대하여 20세기 이후 예술표현 방식들을 바탕으로 연구한다. 3장에서는 동시대 현대미술에서 텍스트의 활용을 통한 표현방식으로 첫째, 기호적 구성방식이자 언어와의 의미결합을 구축하며, 이미지와 결합된 언어는 비결정적 해석이 가능한 상호연관성을 만들어낸다. 둘째, 개념 이입 방식의 표현을 통하여 언어에 내재된 예술적 상징성과 기호로 작가의 의도를 드러낸다. 셋째, 이미지와 텍스트의 상호관계적 표현방식으로 글자, 소리, 이미지 등 여러 구성요소로 텍스트를 활용한 상호관계적 특성을 보여주는 설치작품을 통해 매체의 다양한 변화를 확인할 수 있다. 본 연구 과정을 통해 연구자는 20세기 이후 현대미술에서 다양하게 활용되고 있는 텍스트의 표현적 양상을 확인하고 텍스트가 가진 매체의 가능성에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.
When we interpret an art work which embodies the thought and intention of artist, it is similar to the process of searching for symbolic meaning in text. Through the experience that the viewer has from looking at art is also similar to emotional connection to ambiguous image that the artwork evokes. Due to this reason, an artist as a creator and a viewer who appreciates art, encounter various experiences through semiotic meaning that visual image possesses, just like the artists do not directly show their intention on the surface of their work. It has to be interpreted. After twentieth century, artists started using text as a way of delivering their message of critical voice for topics such as politics, society and culture. This became the reason to think about relation between visual image and text, also relation between verbal language and representation. Furthermore, the way that text was used as an art medium today, such as by combining and transforming visual image and text, is the evidence that it has expanded its utilization and meaning as a tool for artists. The purpose of this paper is to examine the aspect of relation that the usage of image and text as a signifier(‘sound-image’) and image and text as a signified('concept'), in addition to the aspects of expression that text has in contemporary art. First of all, this paper is based on the research of artistic representation in concept of image, text and representation using multimedia after twentieth century art movement. In chapter three, ways of utilizing text, firstly, make text as symbol and combining meaning with language, besides language combined with image makes interrelation of non deterministic interpretation. Secondly, text that has artistic symbolism and sign in language shows intention of the artist. Thirdly, by showing examples of installation works using text as a medium including word, sound, image and so on, we can witness various changes of its use in art. Through this research, we can explore a potential of text as a medium and see how text in artwork after twentieth century has varied.
