동경이란 동판의 경면을 잘 다듬고 문질러 얼굴이 비치게 하는 것이 본래의 용도인데, 그 뒷면에 다양한 문양이 표현되면서 동경의 본래 용도 이외에 다양한 쓰임새로도 사용되었다. 이런 동경은 청동기시대 이후부터 시대별 연속성을 가지고 지속적으로 발굴되고 있다. 동경은 얼굴을 비춰보고 화장을 하는 도구이지만, 고대의 동경은 사람들의 일상생활과 밀접한 관계를 맺으며 당시의 사상, 문화, 시대적인 풍속 등을 동경의 배면에 장식하고 있다. 따라서 동경의 배면을 통해 그 시대의 사상이나 신앙을 짐작할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 동경의 기원과 전개에 대해 살펴보고 동경이 가진 상징성과 용도에 대해 정리한 후, 선사시대와 고려시대를 잇는 삼국 및 통일신라시대의 동경에 대해 연구하였다. 특히 삼국시대와 통일신라 동경의 현황을 시대별로 정리하고 동경의 기형과 문양에 대해 분석한 결과 다음과 같다. 첫째, 동경의 상징성과 용도가 시기별로 차이가 나타나는 것이다. 둘째, 동경의 기형이 원형만이 나타나던 삼국시대와 달리 통일신라에 들어서 다양한 형태가 나타난다는 것이다. 셋째, 삼국시대에 비해 통일신라시대에 들어 동경의 문양이 구체적인 형상을 갖추고 있다는 것이다. 넷째, 이전시대에선 볼 수 없었던 특수기법이 사용된 동경이 통일신라시대에 나타나는 것이다.

Bronze mirrors were originally used to produce reflection by clearing and rubbing the surface of a copperplate. However, as numerous patterns were engraved on the back, they have been used for purposes other than intended. Bronze mirrors have been excavated with chronological continuity from the late Bronze Age. Basically used for personal grooming and deeply ingrained in people’s daily life, bronze mirrors reflected philosophy, culture and customs of the time on the back. Therefore, the backside of bronze mirrors enables the future generation to catch a glimpse of philosophy or religion of the past. This paper examines the origin and development of bronze mirrors, explores their symbolism and use, and studies bronze mirrors of the Three Kingdom and Unified Silla periods which succeed prehistoric times and precede Goryeo Dynasty. Especially, the status of bronze mirrors of the Three Kingdom and Unified Silla periods was organized in a chronological order, and figure and pattern were analyzed as follows. First, bronze mirrors had different symbolism and usage by time period. Second, while mostly taking a round shape in the Three Kingdom period, bronze mirrors were created in various forms in the Unified Silla period. Third, compared to the Three Kingdom period, bronze mirrors have taken specific patterns in the Unified Silla period. Last but not least, unprecedented special techniques were used to create bronze mirrors in the Unified Silla period.
