ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a training approach in which some of the necessary interviewing skills were successfully taught through the microcounseling model of communication. Mental retardation, mental illness, physical handicaps, or some combination of these problems were present in most cases with varying degrees of severity, so the range of problems, with respect to rehabilitation potential, was wide. Experiences in using the skill training microcounseling model in a mentally retarded population have yielded several guidelines for future work. Many clients mentally retarded or not, have difficulty obtaining jobs because they lack adequate interview skills. If mentally retarded persons can improve their eye contact and body posture, they would have a better chance for future employment. Training retarded persons for job interviews has received little attention because they were usually assisted by advocates often present during job interviews to mediate communication difficulties. The constant review and practice of these two skill areas after the initial learning sessions is helpful.
