ABSTRACT

The engine trailing wheels are carried in a truck pivoted by means of a long arm projecting forward to a point near the front end of the fire-box. The latter it will be noticed has sloping front and back plates and mounted on it are safety valves of the ‘pop’ type. The makers of the Hasler instrument have endeavoured to produce a speed indicator and recorder which will indicate and register the momentary speeds, whilst retaining all the advantages of an entirely mechanical action. One of the illustrations on page 84 shows a dining car lately built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company, Ltd., to the order of the British South Africa Company, for use on the Mashonaland Railways. The interior paneling of the dining saloon is finished up to the garnish rail in rich dark mahogany, the panels and mouldings being of the same material, highly polished.
