ABSTRACT
This chapter seeks to address the issue and explores what constitutes "usable professional knowledge of subject matter" in relation to language teaching, together with the related question of how best to foster such knowledge among pre-service and in-service teachers. It focuses on the second/foreign-language (L2) context, addresses both the teaching of L2 as a subject and also the teaching of content subjects through the medium of the learners' L2. The chapter also explores the importance of language awareness (LA) for teachers from a variety of perspectives. It considers the nature of the knowledge about language that L2 teachers need in order to be effective professionals. The chapter discusses the methodologies that have been most closely associated with teacher development in this tradition, and examines some of the approaches to the development of Teacher LA adopted in pre-service and in-service programmes for L2 teachers.
