ABSTRACT

This chapter explores gender, South African policing, and police integrity. Although represented within the former South African Police force (SAP) since 1972, recent statistics indicate that women are yet to be completely integrated within the South African Police Service (SAPS), despite the fact that the SAPS is among the world leaders in numerical representation of women within its ranks. The chapter discusses prior studies investigating the relation between police culture, police integrity, and gender. It also elaborates on the specific experience of South Africa’s integration of women into the SAPS. The chapter concludes with an empirical analysis of gender differences among SAPS officers in relation to their views regarding misconduct seriousness, appropriate and expected discipline, and willingness to report.
