ABSTRACT

3In the beginning of February1 the ship was hauled out of her winter moorings and removed into a convenient birth2 for fitting out. The casks were placed in proper order in the hold, the ground tier filled with water as ballast, and the provisions, water, and other stores taken in immediately afterwards. We omitted filling the second tier of casks with water with the view of keeping the ship at as light a draught of water as possible for convenience in getting to sea – which was particularly necessary as the Bar (‘was’ deleted) at the mouth of the Harbour was singularly bad.3
