ABSTRACT

Lynn et al. recently proposed an expanded version of response set theory and integrative models of hypnosis. In this chapter, we present an updated multivariate and integrative model that highlights the importance of response sets, expectancies, and the shaping of goal-directed imaginings; acknowledges differences in hypnotic, dissociative, and fantasy-based abilities; and recognizes the influence of attitudes, beliefs, and personal motivation on responsiveness to suggestions. A unique feature of the model is its grounding in the predictive coding model whereby predictions or expectations are contrasted with outcomes. The model encourages the use of implementation instructions to shape response sets and achieve desired goals and clinical outcomes. We summarize the model, detail its empirical foundation, and extrapolate a variety of treatment implications of the theory.
