ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the research in three areas: the impact of arts education on learning in general, the potential for arts education to enhance the learning of intellectually or academically gifted individuals, and the factors needed in childhood and youth for the development of arts talent to the highest levels. It also discusses the arts education recently appeared in the Deseret News, a leading newspaper in metropolitan Salt Lake City, UT. Although the PCAH found that most studies were correlational, the report did locate a few studies showing a causal relationship between arts education and academic outcomes in typically tested areas such as reading and mathematics. Relatively few of the studies cited in the previous section investigated the impact of arts education on students with varying degrees of academic achievement. One exception to the paucity of research on the effects of arts education on gifted students is the 2019 study conducted by Rosen-O'Leary and Thompson.
