ABSTRACT
This chapter looks into the activity domains of universities, and it critically discusses how relevant changes in the recent past are shaping the tertiary education field in the areas of research, education, entrepreneurial innovation, and societal outreach. Moving from the analysis of a number of scientific technological universities at global level in terms of research excellence, advancement in education and training, ability to link research and entrepreneurship and to take up social responsibilities, the chapter singles out the main trends that will play a crucial role in the next years.
