ABSTRACT

As platforms expand and assume the role of markets in the digital economy, users’ attention becomes crucial to the future of this business model. While there is an overabundance of information and data, human attention continues to be limited. The growing competition for attention may in the long run prove to be not only disruptive but fatal to the booming economy which currently trades in the currency of attention. The multitude of information and information channels decreases attention spans and increases the number of distractions, the recovery from which is already causing billions of losses to business. Despite the development of personal strategies for coping with time deficits, the gap between the supply of information and human ability to pay attention may seriously impair the platform economy.
