ABSTRACT

Dysarthria often arises as part of a systemic neurological disorder. It can arise from isolated peripheral nerve lesions and infections or from local trauma. This case report describes dysarthria due to bilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy arising from COVID-19. An important issue was whether dysarthria arose as a result of neurological complications associated with the COVID-19 or whether it was linked to medical interventions used in the treatment of the patient with COVID-19. Dysarthria arising from this isolated cranial nerve impairment is considered, and the principles underlying the intervention approach employed are laid out step by step. The role of telepractice in the delivery of treatment is also discussed.
