ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how the author stands with one foot in the world of sport with the other firmly in the clinical world, and the challenges that exist from both sides. It covers the need to conceptualize sport as a culture to support athletes with eating disorders. Some view athletes as the epitome of health, but the author observes athletes-particularly elite athletes—as self—sacrificing competitors who seek to be the best even when other aspects of life suffer. The chapter discusses how disordered eating is accepted within many sport cultures as athletes work toward excellence as well as the dangers of certain behaviors. It goes on to describe how athletes may resist psychological support, even when they need it. The author discusses the need to meet these athletes with curiosity and gratitude to encourage them to open up. Lastly, the chapter covers sport-specific risk factors, including the coach–athlete relationship, team dynamics, revealing uniforms, and the like.
