ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 (‘The changing nature of relationships’) explores aspects of change theory in a school context and focuses on the inevitable changes and separations in relationships and the emotional impact of these. Informed by the successful experience of transitions in early years pedagogy, the chapter highlights the importance of enabling continuity and safety for all primary aged children. Strategies are offered to support and improve children’s experiences of small daily transitions in school, larger life events and transfer from one school to another. Consideration is given to increasing the amount of autonomy and participation children are offered in these circumstances and how teachers can ensure they are equipped to conduct the process of change in the most loving way.
