ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on greening discourses of the Nordic Arctic regions, which make up the continental part of the European Arctic. These regions are Troms & Finnmark and Nordland in Arctic Norway, Norrbotten and Västerbotten in Arctic Sweden and Lapland in Arctic Finland. We introduce three different discourses in connection to regional development and regional renewal. To what degree does the discourses open or close the innovative capability within the region? Green transition in the northern innovation system is a challenging task, as extractive industries and natural resource economies dominate the composition of the northern economy. Economic sustainability related to the green transition has not been studied in a great depth in the European Arctic regions earlier, and we define our chapter as a contribution to this field.
