ABSTRACT

Schools might focus on stress management because it is naturally a part of personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE). The Department for Education (DfE) have become increasingly aware of the value of PSHE in the lives of children and young people. The DfE interest in PSHE gathered momentum and they later issued a policy statement titled, Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Personal Social Health and Economic Education. This policy statement was aimed at a change in the law to provide these subjects with a sound legal basis. Stress management with its emphasis on anxiety reduction and early intervention, fits easily into the PSHE curriculum and culture of schools. Schools are increasingly involved in early intervention, prevention and working with external agencies. National developments to support this include the Mental Health and Wellbeing initiative, which aims to provide increased mental health support to schools and colleges and faster access to National Health Service services.
