ABSTRACT

Nearly 15 years after its development, the Y-Shaped model remains influential in the integration of identity and emotional changes into neurorehabilitation. Since its inception there has been a growth in “third-wave” psychological therapies such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), applied to the challenges of life post brain injury. In this chapter we outline key principles of the Y-Shaped model alongside those of ACT and illustrate a number of areas of conceptual and technical convergence. A range of ACT-based approaches can be readily integrated into rehabilitation in a way which is informed by the Y-Shaped model, providing coherence to rehabilitation programmes organised around an understanding of human needs and emotions.
