ABSTRACT

Education empowers and ensures equity and equality in society. To achieve these objectives many policies have been framed from rights-based perspectives. Children with Developmental Disabilities (CwDDs) are presumed to benefit the most from such policies that especially encourage an inclusive approach in education. Developmental disabilities are a group of non-progressive conditions that remain for lifetime and make these children dependent on others for their daily needs, albeit the nature of the need varies from one child to another. Educating these children in schools requires special kind of training, attention and infrastructure for which we are not well equipped at present. This chapter examines various policies and their underlying provisions for inclusive education of CwDDs along with analysing the spread of four major developmental disabilities among tribal children in the state of Odisha. It also discusses the challenges in implementing inclusive education for CwDDs and suggests some measures for its smooth execution.
