ABSTRACT
A summer student at the Labrador Institute Library and Archive in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada watches TV episodes in English and Inuktitut. These are some of the ways that the Labrador Institute has participated in bringing local and academic communities together intellectually for 39 years. A unit of Memorial University, the only university in Canada's easternmost province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Labrador Institute was established in 1979 to be Memorial's permanent presence in the provincial north. Active throughout all of Labrador, the Institute emphasises northern and indigenous partnerships and programmes. The Labrador Institute Library and Archive dates to 1983 when the incidental accumulation of reference materials and original outputs led to the creation of the Labrador Institute of Northern Studies Information Centre. In 2012, the renamed Labrador Institute Library and Archive became a fully integrated branch of a Memorial University-wide library system based in Newfoundland some 800 km (497 mi) away.
