ABSTRACT

Writing about the entire European conflict during the Second World War cannot satisfactorily be accomplished without summarizing or passing over several aspects. The topic, together with the breadth of the subject, renders even a broad brushstroke history of the European war impossible. As such, this chapter’s main purpose is to convey the course of the land component in the European war – where it occurred, with what resources, how those resources were employed, and for what objectives – by providing an introductory text that utilizes and signposts some of the key works in relevant areas and fields of study. It does not purport to provide a new analysis of the war and its style of warfare but can be used as a springboard from which further research and knowledge can be gained from the sources referenced.
