ABSTRACT

Underlying Dialogic Literary Argumentation is an understanding of reading and writing as social and dialogic. Part of the social nature of reading and writing in response to the commercial concerns what can be called normalization. By normalization it means the treatment of some cultural or social phenomenon as if it were natural rather than only one option among other options. For example, sometimes the interpretation of a literary work gets normalized in the sense that everyone comes to accept that interpretation as the only possible interpretation so much so that no other interpretations are viewed as even possible. This chapter takes a close examination of one student’s essay in order to highlight the social and dialogic processes that get taken up in the writing. That is, from the perspective of Dialogic Literary Argumentation writing is social and dialogic and it is social and dialogic at many levels.
