ABSTRACT

Bilateral trade activity between Yunnan and India via the passages in Myanmar and Tibet has existed for a long time. In a period after the establishment of People’s Republic of China, local trade was suspended except in a limited area along the border due to the alteration of domestic and international relation and policies. This chapter discusses Yunnan-India local trade, includes all business enterprises or individuals in Yunnan except formally recognized foreign trade entities, to be engaged in the trade, directly or indirectly, with India. The research available about Yunnan-Indian trade relations mainly focus on the communication history between China and foreign countries. Although Yunnan has good natural resources and advantages for opening itself up to the outside world and economic development, it belongs to one of the backward provinces in China. Yunnan-India trade as belonged to ‘country-to-country’ or ‘government-to-government’ trade.
