ABSTRACT

In 1986, the World Wide Fund for Nature invited representatives of five world religions to Assisi to explore how they could work together on environmental issues to find vision and hope: vision to discover a new and caring relationship with the rest of the living world, and hope that the destruction of nature can be stopped before all is wasted and gone. In 1995, the Alliance of Religions and Conservation was launched to continue working with the five groups. Now there are 12 faith groups involved. This chapter examines some of these religious positions on humanity and nature, explores their strengths and limitations, and discusses a number of success stories claimed for this approach.
