ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the organisational context for the tools and frameworks discussed in the previous chapter. It highlights the role of people and organisational processes and practices, focused on the activity and agency of human actors in sustainability management. It considers in turn key aspects of this agency in action: the dynamics of interpretation and meaning making on sustainability, the significance of strategy and strategy-making in (re)defining the relationship between social, ecological and economic goals, and the real nature of the ‘work’ of sustainability management by sustainability professionals and other actors. Chapters 4 and 5 together present a holistic picture of sustainability management in that just as there are both material and social aspects of the sustainability dilemma, a successful response entails all of technologies, practices and social dynamics.
