Abstract
During the feasibility study of new projects, value engineering encompasses a variety of analyses ranging from functional analysis to detailed life cycle costing. In this critical stage of the project, microcomputers greatly facilitate the analysis and relieve the value engineering team from the associated manual calculations. They also provide the team with a database needed to compare the construction cost to the functional cost of various systems. This paper discusses the application of two commonly available microcomputer programs to systematic analyses of construction projects. It demonstrates the use of database management programs for storing cost information of different systems and for conducting functional analysis and cost contribution analysis for various projects. The paper also discusses the use of cost information, stored by the database management programs, to conduct life cycle costing with microcomputer spreadsheet software.
