Transgender People and Dating

Transgender people have a variety of considerations when dating. Three considerations are the focus of this entry: (1) labeling one’s sexual orientation, (2) disclosing one’s profile as trans*, and (3) seeking either social support for public transition or gender affirmation in dating relationships. Because dating, at present, is another context of cisnormativity (in the United States and in many other cultures), women are expected to have vaginal/vulval genital structures and men are expected to have penile/scrotal genital structures. Thus, cisnormativity simultaneously rests on a binary understanding of gender self-categorization and genital labeling. Cisnormativity, therefore, creates unique psychological challenges for both binary and nonbinary trans* individuals, who are detailed in this entry.
