Ransomware

Ransomware is a class of extortion-based attack that locks the victims’ resources and requests money to release them. The context of ransomware attacks is not entirely new, and such attacks were registered as far back as the end of the 1980s. However, the recent resurgence of some high-profile ransomware attacks has resulted in increasing concern about this class of cyberattacks. For example, in 2015, CryptoWall 3.0 made headlines around the world as a highly profitable ransomware family, causing an estimated $325 million in damages. As another example, the 2017 Sony ransomware attack received large media attention, and the U.S. government even took the official position that North Korea was behind the attack.
