Tajikistan

Tajikistan, a Central Asian nation, borders China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Tajikistan also borders Afghanistan, which is a base of international terrorism, and the world's largest producer of opium. Tajikistan was the poorest republic within the Soviet Union and reportedly is the poorest country in the region.

According to the World Bank, nearly two thirds of the population lives below the poverty line. Soon after gaining its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Tajikistan collapsed into a devastating civil war. For years, various factions battled each other across the remote and mountainous territory for control. Thousands were killed and many more displaced, resulting in about 80 percent of the population suffering poverty.
