Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to study the research published in the field of pilgrimage tourism and indexed in the Scopus collection. The entire data of research publications with keywords “tourism” and “pilgrimage” in their title and abstract are collected. A total of 1027 documents are found published in 499 sources with a total citation of 15956. Out of these documents published, 965 are originally published in English and the next largest number of articles published is in Spanish and French with an equal number of 15 articles. The article titled “The Anthropology of Tourism” published in Annals of Tourism Research (1983) was the most cited article (452) and International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage (2017) is the journal with the greatest number of documents published and Annals of Tourism Research is the journal with the highest number of citations (4190) in this field. This study will be useful to the researchers and policy makers to understand the research in the field for effective decision-making and further research.
