이 글은 1910년에 이루어진 다카하시 도루의 『춘향전』과 『흥부전』의 번역 사례를 중심으로, 조선 고전 번역의 내용을 살피고 지향을 알아보았다. 본론에서 검토한 내용은 크게 두 가지였다.
첫째, 조선의 고전소설이 어떠한 수용 과정을 거쳐 설화로 변용되어지는가 하는 점이다. 이러한 과정을 고찰하기 위하여 다카하시의 『조선물어집』에 수록된 작품의 수집 배경과 수집 과정, 다카하시가 『춘향전』과 『흥부전』의 번역 과정에서 사용한 판본 등을 분석하였다. 이에 대해서는 선행 연구의 성과를 바탕으로 검토하는 동시에 선행 연구에서 미흡했던 부분을 보충하였다. 그 결과 다카하시가 조선 고전 번역 과정에서 사용한 『춘향전』 판본은 경판 30장본, 『흥부전』 판본은 경판 25장본이라는 점이 더욱 분명해졌다.
둘째, 다카하시가 경판 30장본과 경판 25장본을 사용하여 『춘향전』과 『흥부전』을 번역하는 과정에서 발생한 여러 문제점에 대해 고찰하였다. 다카하시본 「춘향전」과 「흥부전」을 구체적으로 검토해 보면, 일본어 번역 과정에서 원전과는 다르게 축약, 첨가, 개작이 이루어졌으며, 부분적으로는 번안에 가까운 형태로 번역이 이루어졌다. 이렇게 변개된 데에는 다카하시가 『춘향전』과 『흥부전』을 문학텍스트 라기보다는 조선의 풍토와 조선인의 심성을 이해하기 위한 수단으로만 인식한 결과로 보인다. 이 논문에서 번역본과 원전의 내용을 비교하여 구체적으로 그 양상을 검토하였다.

This article examined the contents of the Joseon classic translation and its orientation, focusing on the translation cases of Chunhyang-jeon and Heungbu-jeon by Doru Takahashi in 1910. There were two main problems reviewed in the main subject.
First, through what acceptance process Joseon"s classic novels were transformed into tales. To examine this process, the background and collection process of the works contained in Takahashi"s Chosen no Monogatari, and the editions used by Takahashi in the translation process of Chunhyang-jeon and Heungbu-jeon were analyzed. This was reviewed by using the results of previous studies, while supplementing the insufficient
parts of previous studies. As a result, it became more clear that the edition of Chunhyang-jeon used by Takahashi in the process of translating the Joseon classic was 30 Seoul edition and that of Heungbu-jeon was 25 Seoul edition.
Second, Takahashi examined various problems that occurred in the process of translating Chunhyang-jeon and Heungbu-jeon using 30 Seoul edition and 25 Seoul edition. Looking at Takahashi Chunhyang-jeon and Heungbu-jeon in detail, abbreviations, additions, and adaptations were made differently from the original ones in the Japanese translation process, and partially translated in a form close to the original version. This change seems to be the result of Takahashi"s recognition of Chun hyang-jeon and Heungbu-jeon only as a means to understand the climate of Joseon and the mentality of Koreans rather than literary texts. In this paper, the contents of the translated versions and the original texts were compared and the pattern was specifically reviewed.
