일반 웹툰·출판만화와의 비교를 통해 본 컷툰의 독자 경험

콘텐츠의 창작과 소비 형태를 결정하는 플랫폼의 힘은 웹툰과 같이 태생적으로 플랫폼에 의존성이 큰 서사 양식에 있어 더욱 크게 작용한다. 플랫폼에서 어떤 형식을 지원하고, 나아가 권장하느냐에 따라 웹툰의 생태계는 변화한다. 네이버 플랫폼이 모바일 이용자 수 증가를 고려하여 도입한 컷툰 형식은 기존 웹툰과 다른 서사적 원리에 기반해있다. 컷툰은 독자로 하여금 컷이라는 분절적인 이야기의 단위를 통해 스토리를 접하게한다. 이러한 특성은 컷툰이 기존 출판만화와도 호환성을 갖는 한편, 몽타주 등 컷의 영화적 활용 가능성을 통해 영상 매체와도 친연성을 갖는 바탕이 된다. 독자의 댓글을 위한 공간 역시 분절됨으로써, 한편으로는 더 즉각적이지만 한편으로는 더 의식적인 댓글참여 환경이 마련된다. 따라서 컷툰은 기존 출판·영상 매체에 익숙한 독자와 웹·모바일문화에 친근한 독자 모두에게 매력적인 콘텐츠를 제공할 수 있는, 웹툰의 한 진화형이라할 수 있다. 이동건의 <유미의 세포들>은 전통적인 만화의 매력을 살리면서도 컷툰의형식에 적응한 대표적인 웹툰으로, 이 작품의 분석을 통해 컷의 코믹스적 활용, 영화적활용, 그리고 댓글을 통한 독자와의 협상 기능 활용을 통한 컷툰의 서사적 가능성을 확인할 수 있다.

The power of the platform, which determines the form of content creation and consumption, plays a greater role in narrative styles that are inherently platform-dependent, such as webtoons. The ecosystem of webtoons changes depending on which formats are supported and recommended by the platform. The cuttoon format introduced by the Naver platform in consideration of the increase in the number of mobile users is based on a narrative principle different from that of the existing webtoon. Cut-toon allows the reader to experience the story through the segmental unit of story called cut. These characteristics are the basis for having compatibility with existing published comics, while also having affinity with video media through the possibility of using cuts such as montages for cinematic purposes. Therefore, cuttoon can be said to be an evolved form of webtoon that can provide attractive content to both readers familiar with the existing publishing and video media and those familiar with web and mobile culture. Lee Dong-gun's <Yumi's Cells> is a representative webtoon that adapts to the cut-toon format while retaining the charm of traditional comics and it shows narrative potential of cuttoons through the use of features of them.
