<기생충>은 음식(먹이) 문화의 관점에서, 새로운 탐색을 시도하고 그 의미를 재음미하기에 적합한 작품이다. 먹이의 공여(供與)를 둘러싼 기생(寄生) 관계를 전면으로 다룬 작품답게, <기생충>에는 음식과 관련된 장면, 사건, 비유, 상징, 그리고 극작 의도가 비중 있게 농축되어 있다. 일단 <기생충>에서 가난한 기택 일가의 삶과 부유한 박 사장의 처지는, 먹고 마시는 음식으로 가시적으로 대비되고 있다. 기택 일가가 한 잔의 소주와 저가 맥주와 조촐한 환대와 가족 모임에 익숙한 가족이라면, 박 사장 가족은 고가의 양주와 귀한 생수가 가득하고 부르면 달려오는 사람들과 화려한 파티가 가능한 재력가이다. 은밀한 취직을 통해 박사장 집을 점령하여 그 부를 나눌 수 있다고 믿었던 기택 일가는 고가의 음식을 게걸스럽게 먹고 마시면서, 하나의 꿈을 상정한다. 자신들이 기생 생물로서 상대의 부(먹이)를 공유할 수 있다는 꿈이 그것이다. 하지만 이 부푼 꿈은 헛된 꿈으로 그치고 만다. 그 결과 기택 가족은 흩어졌고, 박 사장 가족은 무너졌다. 민혁에 대한 기우의 조촐한 환대가 결국 살인의 파티로 끝나는 결말은, 음식 쟁탈전이 초래한 비극적 생존 현장을 증언하는 임무를 수행하고 있다.
