Abstract

The call to expand opportunities for study abroad students in "non-traditional” locations has become a kind of mantra throughout the international education community. This call is almost always allied to the intent significantly to expand numbers going to these non-traditional locations. The purpose of this essay is to define some of the issues that the field of education abroad needs to take in order to create a more concentrated view of what it means and intends.

Author Biography

Michael Woolf

Michael Woolf is President of the Foundation for International Education (FIE), London. He is former Regional Director for the Council on International Exchange (CIEE), where he was responsible for the strategic management of CIEE’s study abroad programs in England, Ireland, India, Anglophone Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Woolf publishes in his area of research, American Literature and Cultural Studies.
