AB - Since the implementation of the local autonomy system in 1990s, a trend has been actively rising to apply cultural elements, including intangible cultural elements, to local development. One case of this is found in Anseong, Gyeonggi-do Province. In Anseong, Baudugi is the central object of public attention with regard to cultural resources. According to a folk tale, she once was known as a leader of a wondering performance troupe, called Namsadangpe, at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. In this paper, I focus on the course by which the “Anseong Namsadang Baudugi” became historical truth, how the Namsadang Pungmulnori associated with her was designated as local cultural property, and that they were constructed as central icons of the local area. I also analyze the concurrence of conflicting interests, discourses and politics, feedback and how the appropriation of folkloristic knowledge intervened in that discourse. At the Anseong Namsadang Baudugi festival, on the vivid field upon which Namsadang and Baudugi were constructed for local representation, there was no division between commodification (which is that culture turns into commodity) and active-rights-for-cultural- enjoyment, public culture and folk culture. Moreover there was no separation between object and subject. Rather diverse tensions were shaping the topography of that festival between conflicting positions which endeavored to achieve their own purposes through conjunction or appropriation of those binary oppositions.
