This study examined the effects of Gestalt art therapy on improving the depression and family relations of a married woman. The participant for this study, a 38 year-old married woman received 16 sessions of Gestalt art therapy from August 10th 2011 to January 14th 2012, once a week, 60 minutes per session. A follow-up test was administered on January 21st 2012. The pre and post-test included MMPI-2 and KFD. Each session was observed and videotaped to complement the self-report measures and to detect any change in behavior. The study found that Gestalt art therapy was effective in improving the depression and family relations of the participant. While the participant's KFD in the pre-test showed the enclosures of figures and the far distance between the figures, her KFD in the post-test showed shortened distance between the figures, interactions among the figures, and no enclosures. In the early phase of the sessions the participant expressed her resentment towards her family members and identified herself as a victim. In the later sessions, she could improve her relations with her family, endeavoring to look on the positive qualities in her family members and developing more intimacy with her family members. However, this study has some limits. One is that the findings were only from one case study, which makes the generalization of the findings difficult. Another limit is that factors affecting the participant's depression could be different from factors affecting the depression of other married women, which may limit the validity of the findings.
