평창올림픽 아이스하키 남북 단일팀 구성으로 통일의 필요성에 대한 부정적 견해가 주목받으면서, 한반도 통일의 개념 정의가 본질적인 문제로 떠오르기 시작했다. ‘남북이 한민족이라고 해서 반드시 하나의 국가를 이룰 필요는 없다’에 찬성 41.1%, 반대 23.5%로, 이들을 세대별로 분류하면, 20대 49.7%로 가장 높은 비율로 젊을수록 민족주의에 입각한 통일 담론에 부정적 태도를 보였고, ‘평화로운 공존 형태의 통일’에 20대가 가장 높은 동의를 보였다. 이처럼 기존의 통일 개념은, ‘한민족이니까 통일해야 한다’는 감성적 민족주의를 더욱 강조했다면, 현재의 2030세대는 ‘평화적인 공존’의 형태를 더욱 설득력있는 합리적인 통일 개념으로 받아들이고 있는 것이다. 본 논문에서는 EU의 우호적인 공존 및 다른 국가들 간의 동질감을 높여주는 다양한 프로그램 연구를 통해, 우리나라의 새로운 통일의 연구방향을 제시하며, 함께 공존할 수 있는 통일 방향을 모색하고자 한다.

In February 2018, at the PyeongChang Olympic Games, the essential question of how to define the concept of unification in Korea has also begun to emerge socially because of a single team for women's ice hockey. 41.1% of the respondents said “South and North Korea do not necessarily have to form a single nation”. That is, they do not think it is necessary to unify because they are Koreans. And 47.8% of the respondents agreed “if the two Koreas can co-exist peacefully without war, unification is not necessary”. This can be interpreted the concept of “peaceful co-existence” is more importantly accepted by the younger generation and it is becoming more and more persuasive as the concept of unification. Although the EU has gathered different countries, it has continued its efforts to maintain a peaceful community for the past 60 years. It tried to suggest some implications for the concept of unification that Korea has to go through in the case of the EU, which has been in the form of ‘peaceful co-existence’. Therefore, it is time to approach the concept of new unification, which can co-exist peacefully in various fields, rather than merely regarding the concept of unification as ‘the one’.
